Electric Grills: A Subculture of Its Own

Electric grilling enjoys its own subculture apart from other recreational grillers. Electric grilling is easy to use, easy to clean and easy to operate. Electric grilling varies little from an electric cook top inside your kitchen. The only real difference being that instead of a convection plate to hold the food, the food is prepared directly above the heating element. This method is just as efficient at conveying heat, but does not result in the same taste as gas or charcoal or wood.

There are various reasons the taste can differ. For starters, the presence of fire in other methods imparts differing amounts of char to the food being prepared. Large quantities of this aren't always tasty, and can be harmful. However, in small amounts the char imparted alters the taste just enough to create a new flavor profile, and makes for a more unique dining experience. Flame also imparts a smoky flavor to the meat, which is absent from electric grills.

Before you tilt your nose up entirely at the prospect of an electric grill, there are some other points to remember. Typically, these grills are portable, intended for tailgating parties or occasionally camping or hunting, with a car adaptor available. Many Army Surplus stores carry a stock of issue grills - which are little more than heating elements with a cord and a base. The ease of plugging in and turning on a grill in this case is superior to gas as well. Gas requires a constant supply of propane, which requires trips to a retailer with a heavy canister to be refilled. Electric grills will function as long as the cord is plugged in.

For specific purposes, electric can outperform its cousins. For portability and reliability, electric grills can't be beat. However, for extended use, it may not be the way to go. It would be silly to put a large electric beast on the deck, though models are available for that purpose. These are no different than your kitchen, and aren't necessary. Even with the control you have over the heat, there's just no substitute for that beautiful orange flame or red ember. If you are looking for something easy, but still want the thrill of the grill, then your best bet is a gas model.

Depending on how often you prepare food in this fashion, the hassle of having the tank refilled will be pins compared to the quality of flavor you'll get from having an actual flame to cook on. And if you are considering frequently cooking in the back yard, then charcoal may be an even better option. With little experience, the practice of getting the fire started with charcoal is less of a chore, and more of a thrill every time. Electric grills just don't compare to their fire bearing counterparts. They have their uses where they certainly shine. Try one out and you may find that you really like your electric grill for convenience and ease of use.
